Police search for suspect in deadly Covington shooting
Investigators are working to track down the person who shot and killed a man Thursday morning in Newton County. It happened just outside of Covington along Kirkland Road.
NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. - A 23-year-old man is dead in Newton County after a shooting early Thursday morning.
The Newton County Sheriff's Office says it responded to a residence on Kirkland Road just west of Covington shortly before 3 a.m. Thursday.
"It was like boom, boom, boom," said Catherine Murdock. "It was just that loud like that."

Neighbors not surprised by deadly Covington shooting

Murdock lives just across the road from where the deadly shooting happened.
"I heard one gunshot and then when I went back to the bed, I heard like five," she said.
The Newton County Sheriff’s Office says deputies rushed to the scene and found a 23-year-old man shot.

23-year-old shot on Kirkland Road
A 23-year-old man was shot shortly before 3 a.m. Sept. 21 at a home on Kirkland Road in Covington.
Medics rushed him to the hospital, but he did not survive.
A neighbor who did not want to be identified says this is a quiet community, but the home where the shooting happened has had issues.
"It's not shocking because the place has always had young guys there; they don't really seem to be causing trouble, but you could tell there's something going on," the neighbor said.
Detectives and crime scene techs stayed on scene for roughly five hours overnight working to figure out what happened. Investigators focused a lot of effort on the home and the white SUV in the front yard.
"Our CID personnel are very thorough, they take their time and that's why they spend so much time in each scene," said Sgt. Jack Redlinger with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators have not identified the victim or said what led up the shooting, but they did say nobody else was injured.
"I pray for the family because it's hard to lose someone like that and not return home," Murdock said.
So far, no arrests in the case.
