What they're saying:

It happened on Jan. 26.

On dash cam video, 24-year-old Derrick Bailey is seen making a run for it with his girlfriend's 3-month-old baby in his arms. The unusual foot chase with the baby followed a high-speed car chase by Bailey and the child’s mother, 25-year-old Karlysa Cameron, who was driving. "In 37 years of law enforcement, I’ve never foot pursued someone carrying a child like that," said Sheriff Babb.

The backstory:

It all started when Fayetteville Police received a call about a woman shoplifting at the Pavilion Shopping Center.

Sheriff Babb says inside the car, deputies found stolen merchandise from several stores, some of it still with security tags.

Timeline:

A Fayette County deputy soon spotted the car, which the video shows refused to pull over and sped away. At one point, the video shows the pursuing deputy losing sight of the car but finding it wrecked at the entrance to a Clayton County subdivision along Fayetteville Road.

During the arrest, a deputy pursued Bailey on foot behind some homes in the subdivision. The video shows the deputy with his Taser drawn.

What's next:

Bailey is facing shoplifting charges in Fayette County and additional charges in Clayton County, where the chase ended.

Cameron is in much bigger trouble. She is facing numerous traffic charges as well as charges of child endangerment. Sheriff Babb says she was also wanted in Fulton County for burglary charges and fought with deputies when they attempted to arrest her.
