MARTA announces public transportation plan for Carter viewing

The body of former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on Dec. 29, at the age of 100, will lie in repose at The Carter Presidential Center from 7 p.m. on Jan. 4 through 6 a.m. on Jan. 7. Following this, his body will be transported to Washington, D.C., for additional services.

For those wishing to pay tribute, MARTA will offer free, direct bus shuttles from the King Memorial rail station to The Carter Presidential Center. These shuttles will operate continuously, departing every three to five minutes around the clock during the designated time period.

Visitors wishing to attend must take a bus from King Memorial Station, though walking and biking are allowed. The bus service is free, but passengers must still pay the fare to ride MARTA to King Memorial.

Parking at King Memorial is unavailable, but MARTA offers numerous parking spaces across its system. Mobility services will run every 15-20 minutes from King Memorial, with certain local bus routes rerouted.

Security measures will be in place, and visitors will be subject to searches. 

PROHIBITED ITEMS:

No backpacks/bags/purses/clutches/camera bags are allowed on the buses or at The Carter Center. An exception will be made for diaper bags, which will be searched by hand. Aerosols, ammunition, animals other than service animals, bicycles, balloons, coolers, drones and other unmanned aircraft systems, explosives, firearms, glass, thermal or metal containers, laser pointers, mace, packages, selfie sticks, toy guns, weapons of any kind, or any other items determined to be potential safety hazards are not allowed.

MARTA will have additional staff available to assist mourners during the tribute period, which is expected to draw many visitors in recognition of President Carter’s enduring connection to Georgia.
