A man died early Wednesday morning after smashing a car into a home in Brookhaven.

According to investigators, the wreck stemmed from an attempted traffic stop in Buckhead on Peachtree Road at Lenox Road around 2:30 a.m.

The Georgia State Patrol said a trooper witnessed a Maserati failing to move over as another trooper tried to stop a vehicle. The GSP said the driver of the Maserati also failed to maintain its lane, so the trooper attempted to pull the vehicle over.

Detectives said the Maserati initially stopped, but then sped off. A pursuit followed and moved into Brookhaven from Peachtree Road to Dresden Drive and south on Apple Valley Road.

The trooper lost sight of the suspect and called off the chase.

Roughly ten minutes later, the driver of the Maserati lost control and crashed into a home on North Druid Hills Road in Brookhaven. Troopers believe high speeds and possible intoxication led to the crash.

The driver was taken to Northside Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A female passenger was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, expected to survive. She told troopers she didn't know the driver and was just getting a ride.

GSP said the family inside the home was not injured.
