Two young people dead, one injured in shooting at southwest Atlanta apartment complex

The agonizing cries of loved ones echoed throughout the streets of Atlanta’s Pittsburgh neighborhood Tuesday evening where Atlanta police officials say someone shot two young people to death and injured a third.

"Zone 3 patrol responded to this location. Upon arrival, they observed the three victims. Two were deceased," APD Homicide Commander Lt. Germain Dearlove said.

APD officials said the call about the shooting on McDaniel Street came in just after 5:30 p.m. Investigators said right now they believe the shooting appears to have been targeted.

"As we see now, the two victims are between the ages of 18 and 21 years old, Black males, a third is also between that age range as well," Dearlove told reporters on scene.

Medics rushed the third victim to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment.

While visibly upset family members of the victims stood behind APD caution tape hoping for answers, dozens of concerned community members watched as police worked the crime scene.

"I think as a community we just need to band together," Dominique Nixon told FOX 5.

2 dead, 1 injured along McDaniel Road

The agonizing cries of loved ones echoed throughout the streets of Atlanta’s Pittsburg neighborhood Tuesday evening where Police say someone shot three young people. It's the second deadly shooting at a southwest Atlanta apartment complex in less than 24 hours.

Nixon does community outreach in the Pittsburgh neighborhood and others around metro Atlanta through a movement called Cure Violence.

He told FOX 5 despite Atlanta City Council members voting to make changes to its curfew enforcement in an effort to curb youth violence, there’s much more that needs to be done.

"We could blame it on the parents, we could blame it on the judicial system, we could blame it on the schools, but it’s gonna take everybody hand in hand," he said.

Nixon said he hopes to reach more young people like the survivor, who is at Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition, to try and prevent any further retaliation.

"It takes a village so it’s gonna take all of us to Kind of police these streets and get these kids busy doing something active and keep their minds busy active and focused on something positive."

APD officials told reporters on scene they are scouring for surveillance video and witness statements as they are still searching for the shooter.
