Investigation continues into McDonough multiple shootings

Police in McDonough said a string of evening shootings are connected and investigators are trying to pinpoint persons of interest. Two men were killed, and a woman wounded in three separate shootings on Aug. 9.

Police in McDonough said a string of evening shootings are connected and investigators are trying to pinpoint persons of interest. Two men were killed, and a woman wounded in three separate shootings on Aug. 9.

Police said officers were investigating a non-fatal shooting before midnight, when three minutes later they received reports of a shooting on of Fairview Drive. At the second scene, police found a man dead. Police were called to a third scene about an hour later, where officers in the area of Bridges Road found another man dead.

"We need to put the guns down," said McDonough Police Chief Ken Noble. "They have overtaken our schools; they have overtaken conversations. Every time we turn the TV on somebody has lost their life."

Residents along Fairview Road, where one of the murder victims' bodies was discovered, are stunned such violence hit so close to home.

"It never happens here. This is an old folk's neighborhood," said Addarius Tarpley. "My grandmother stays here, everyone I grew up with grandma, grandparents still stay here."

Mayor Pro Tem Rufus Stewart visited with residents in the neighborhoods where the shootings occurred.

"During my 33 years it's the first time we've experienced this. So, it's very troubling to me," said Stewart.

Police said all three shootings are connected, but did not elaborate on what links the three incidents.

"The investigation remains active and evidence is being evaluated to determine persons of interest," Major Kyle Helgerson said

Chief Noble condemned the shootings and said city and county law enforcement are working together to investigate. Noble said he personally knew one of the victims and called the deadly shootings "heartbreaking."

"We should be talking about sending our kids to school instead of about somebody losing their life," Noble said.

McDonough Mayor Sandra Vincent offered her condolences to the victims' families.

"To the families of those who have lost their lives in this senseless act of gun violence," she said.

Police are conducting interviews, but want anyone else with information to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to call McDonough Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division at 470-878-1091.
