McDonough Police Officer Passes Away

FOX 5 News has learned a member of the McDonough Police Department, and long-time employee with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, has passed away.

Bryan Woodie has been in the law enforcement for more than 30 years and 29 of those years were spent in Fayette County. He eventually retired as Major Bryan Woodie and was most recently working as a police officer in McDonough.

“He has dedicated his life, as many officers have, to protecting and serving his community,” his daughter, Cori, said.

In 2014, Woodie started feeling ill and was sick for weeks. His family said after many tests, doctors discovered he had developed a Staph blood infection that settled in his heart. In August of 2014 he had to have his valve replaced and was able to go back to work after taking weeks off.

Last month, he was sick with the flu while going on a trip to Washington. His family learned that another infection was in his heart, on two of his valves. They found out he had developed an abscess in his heart and needed surgery, but wasn’t strong enough to do so.

Officer Woodie passed away on Sunday morning.

“The heartbreak I am feeling is searing,” Cori said. “Please continue to pray for our family and his two granddaughters. The lights of his life.”

Cori describes her dad as the most incredible man she has ever known.
