Large flames and heavy smoke could be seen for miles around a metal recycling plant in Clayton County Monday evening, as firefighters took a little more than two hours to put out the flames.

Clayton County officials said around 6:50 p.m., they received a 911 call of a fire at the Amerigo Metal Recycling plant off Forest Parkway and Jonesboro Road.

Flames shot 30 feet into the sky as two dozen firefighters battled the blaze. Officials said a worker spotted sparks coming from machinery as they called 911.

FOX 5 viewers sent photos and videos showing the thick smoke. Forest Parkway was closed for hours during the evening.

Crews attacked the fire from cranes high above the ground and worked to put out hot spots in the debris. It was put out around 9:15 p.m.

No one was hurt. Firefighters are still investigating what started the flames.
