Pregnant girl, 16, found dead in Loganville woods

Gwinnett County police are looking for whoever killed a pregnant 16-year-old and left her body in the woods. Family members found Mia Campos' body early Monday morning.

Investigators have made an arrest in connection with the homicide of a pregnant 16-year-old whose body was found in the woods of Gwinnett County early Monday morning.

Officials say at around 1 a.m., officers responded to the 3600 block of Stephens Road in Loganville after the family of 16-year-old Mia Campos called 911.

The family told officers that Campos had left the house on Sunday night with an unknown person and never returned home. Her family used a cell phone app to track her to the wooded area. There, they found her body.

While the initial evidence made it difficult to determine how Campos died, an autopsy on Tuesday led the medical examiner to rule her death a homicide.

On Wednesday, officials say they arrested Campos's ex-boyfriend, Jesus Monroy, on a charge of giving false statements to a police officer.

"During that interview they determined he provided with false statements, and he was arrested in connection to providing false statements to a police officer," Sgt. Collin Flynn said.

Mia Campos' family seeks answers in pregnant teen's death

Mia's parents say Monroy had been with them for the past two days.

Family members say they still have a lot of questions surrounding the death. Edward Campos and his wife, Miriam, remember their 16-year-old daughter Mia Campos at the site where she was found dead.

"Face down. It was hard. I knew something was wrong. Her lips and her nose. They murdered my baby," Mia's father, Edward Campos, said.

Edward used phone tracking just after midnight Monday morning when Campos did not return.

"Somehow we came this way, and because I didn't have a flashlight, I just had my phone. Then I said, 'She's right there.' It just broke my heart. Thank God that I found her," Campos said.

Mia was seven months pregnant.

"We keep praying every night and that's why he came with his parents. That's why I was shocked when they sent me the notice. I was like, ‘Wow,’" Campos said.

As police work to figure out just what happened, these parents say they saw a sign this morning that their baby girl was still with them.

"You could see a little bird standing right there. And I told my wife, ‘She's right there,’" Campos said.

The investigation remains ongoing. If you have any information about Campos's death, call the Gwinnett County Police Department at (770) 513-5300 or the Crime Stoppers tip line at (404) 577-8477.

A GoFundMe campaign was started to support Mia's family and cover her funeral expenses.
