VENICE (FOX 13) - People from Marco Island, to Orlando, up to Crystal River have reported seeing a light streaking across the sky early Monday night.
Video from multiple sources seems to confirm the sightings, but there's no official report on what was behind the streaking fireball.
Dashcam video released by the Venice Police Department shows a streaking light in the horizon at 11:17 p.m. It's the same time almost 100 others, from as far north as Georgia and Alabama, reported seeing the light.
The American Meteorological Society provides a way for sightings to be reported, grouped and eventually put together on a map to determine a likely location for possible meteor activity. This particular case has 93 reports from across west and central Florida and has been mapped in the Gulf of Mexico in the area west of Venice and Siesta Key.
Venice Municipal Government posted VPD dashcam video on Facebook, saying there were multiple reports of a bright flash in the western sky late Monday. Experts say the light was likely a brighter-than-usual meteor, known as a fireball.
