Multi-million dollar drug ring busted in North Georgia

TOCCOA, Ga. - Wednesday was the culmination of 200 officers, 10 months and nearly $10 million in seized drugs as the Georgia Bureau of Investigations said they have dismantled the so-called Mayfield's Drug Trafficking Ring. The GBI said the ring is responsible for supplying narcotics across North Georgia.

The roundup is based out of Toccoa, but suspects were arrested in numerous North Georgia counties and at least two counties in South Carolina. As of Wednesday night, 24 suspects were taken into custody.

The massive operation was a cooperative effort between federal, state and local agencies. At the heart of the investigation was Horace Mayfield. During the course of the investigation, officials said Mayfield's men have moved an estimated $9.5 million worth of drugs. That includes 72 kilos of cocaine, 15 kilos of meth, and 50 pounds of marijuana.

The GBI said the drug kingpin had been operating in the region for several years. Those involved will likely be charged under the RICO statute, which is used in organized crime cases.

More raids are possible across region as authorities continue to gut the criminal enterprise.
