6-month-old boy killed in 'targeted' shooting at Atlanta apartment complex identified
ATLANTA - The Fulton County Medical Examiner has identified the 6-month-old baby killed in what police are calling a targeted shooting at a southwest Atlanta apartment complex Wednesday night.
The gunfire was reported at 2909 Campbellton Road SW around 8:15 p.m. The address is listed as the Hills at Greenbriar apartment buildings.
Investigators say a 27-year-old woman, a 23-year-old man, and a 6-month-old boy were shot. All three were taken to the hospital. The 6-month-old died from their injuries. The 23-year-old was listed in critical condition. The 27-year-old was stable, according to police.
Thursday morning, officials identified the baby as Charles Watson Jr.
According to Deputy Charles Hampton, Jr., the shooting was targeted and stems from an earlier shooting that took place at the same apartment complex in May. Police are looking for at least two shooters in addition to a light-colored four-door sedan.
The violence has shaken up even seasoned investigators with the Atlanta Police Department.
"Any death in our city is a tragic innocent, but anything involving a child makes it difficult," Hampton said.
Angela Olsen heard the shots and came out of her apartment to investigate. She was the one who found the injured adults.
"I heard a woman yelling and saying ‘Someone shot my baby. Someone shot my baby. Call 911,’" she said.
She called authorities and tried to help any way that she could.
Olsen also thinks the gunmen hit her car as they fled the scene.
"I'm in shock, and I'm scared," she said.
Police are asking anyone who may have information about the shooting to call APD investigators.
