New Year’s celebrations in Georgia: From cherry blossoms to buzzards

ATLANTA - Everyone in Georgia knows the Peach Drop and Tallapoosa’s Possum Drop, but there are several other unique drops across the state that celebrate local culture and heritage. Here’s a look at some of those:

Macon's Cherry Blossom Ball Drop

Macon will honor its title as the "Cherry Blossom Capital of the World" with the Cherry Blossom Ball Drop. A six-foot-wide illuminated ball, adorned with metal cherry blossoms and pink lights, will descend at midnight in downtown Macon. This event pays tribute to the city's annual International Cherry Blossom Festival and offers a family-friendly atmosphere with live entertainment and local cuisine.

Savannah's "Up the Cup" Celebration

Savannah's River Street will host the "Up the Cup" celebration, featuring the raising of a to-go cup to toast the New Year. Since its inception in 2014, this event has embraced the city's open-container laws and vibrant nightlife. Festivities include live music, fireworks over the Savannah River, and a communal toast as the cup is elevated at midnight.

Perry's Buzzard Drop

Unadilla will host its annual Hog Drop, where a symbolic hog is lowered at midnight. The Hog Drop has garnered attention for its distinctive approach to welcoming the New Year.
