Newton High School placed on lockdown because of threats

Newton High School was placed on lockdown on Thursday morning because of threats against the students and staff.

A heavy police presence could be seen at Newton High School early Thursday morning.

According to the Newtown County Sheriff's Office, the school was placed on lockdown because of threats to harm students and staff were made Thursday morning.

Students were in the process of being evacuated from the school due to a fire alarm this morning when someone made comments that were a cause for concern.

The Sheriff's Office emphasized on social media that it was not an active shooter situation. It appears that phone calls and or texts were made that contained threats against the school.

Students are being released early because of the incident. Dismissal started at 12:15 p.m.

The Sheriff's Office later said that two students were arrested in connection to the threats and were being questioned. Eventually, a 16-year-old was charged with pulling the fire alarm and the other student was released. The person(s) who reportedly made the threats has not been arrested.
