JEFFERSON, Ga. - Nicholson Mayor, Ronnie Maxwell, turned himself in to GBI agents at the Jackson County Jail Wednesday morning on theft charges.
FOX 5's Chris Shaw broke the news Tuesday night, that Maxwell was expected to turn himself in.
According to a GBI news release, "The investigation began in June of 2015 after allegations surfaced that Maxwell had inappropriately utilized SPLOST funds to pave a private road that he contends is city property."
FOX 5 was at Nicholson City Hall last week, when agents raided the building and walked out with more than a dozen boxes filled with city financial records.
GBI Special Agent, Mike Ayers, tells FOX 5 about $20,000 in tax payer money was used to pave that road.
Mayor Maxwell walked out of the Jefferson County Jail a couple hours after turning himself in, and said he could not comment on the allegations.
