A Gwinnett County high school student has been arrested after officials say he brought a loaded gun to his school.

According to Meadowcreek High School Principal Tommy T. Welch, Ph.D, the incident happened on Monday, Jan. 14 and started after a student resource officer found a student with an e-cigarette.

A search of the student for additional contraband led administrators to find a "loaded handgun in his possession," Welch said.

"We understand that this is an unsettling situation ... weapons have no place in a school," Welch said in a letter to parents. "That is why we are concerned and take this type of situation very seriously."

Officers arrested the unidentified student. He will face criminal charges for having a weapon on the school's campus.
