Oconee County commission tables decision on solar farm

WATKINSVILLE, Ga. (AP) — Oconee County Commission members will leave a controversial rezoning decision on a 238-acre solar farm to a new group of commissioners to decide.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports the commission voted 2-0 to table the request until next January's monthly meeting, when the five-man commission will have three new members.

Prior to Tuesday's meeting, the county's planning commission voted unanimously to recommend denial of the rezone for a farm, which would be next door to two residential subdivisions and near several others.

Jon Williams, a spokesman for the landowners petitioning for the request, said the farm would generate 38 megawatts of electricity and an additional $300,000 a year in property taxes for the county.
