Off-duty deputy shoots suspect at College Park Mexican restaurant
COLLEGE PARK, Ga. - The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened in the parking lot of a College Park Mexican cantina early Sunday morning.
Officials say the incident happened around 1 a.m. at the Cozumel Mexican Cantina located on the 5000 block of Old National Highway.
Two Fulton County Sheriff's Office deputies were working as off-duty security at the cantina when an altercation between patrons started in the restaurant's parking lot.
During the incident, investigators say a 29-year-old College Park resident James Bernard Lawrence Jr. fired at least two shots at patrons, leading to a deputy and security guard firing their weapons.
Lawrence was shot and transported to Grady Memorial Hospital. He is currently in critical condition, officials say. A woman who was not involved in the incident, Keyana Brown, has also been shot. She was transported to Grady and is in stable condition.
No officers were injured during the shooting.
Investigators have not released the subject's identity or what he may be charged with.
