Officer dragged by fleeing suspect at traffic stop
ALPHARETTA, Ga. (FOX 5 Atlanta) - A traffic stop turned dangerous for an Alpharetta officer when he was dragged by a suspect attempting to escape.
According to the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety, the incident happen on the night of April 5 when one of their officers stopped a car that was allegedly driving recklessly on Old Milton Parkway.
Police say while talking to the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Dennis Aguirre, the officer suspected he was impaired and there may have been illegal drugs in the car.
The officer ordered Aguirre out of his car and was beginning to detain him when police say Aguirre fought with the officer, got back in the car, and tried to drive off with the officer holding on.
Aguirre allegedly dragged the officer, whose arm was pinned inside the car, several feet before he was able to turn off the car.
Even with the car off, police say Aguirre tried to run and only stopped because he was tackled to the ground.
Aguirre is now in jail charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, trafficking illegal narcotics, possession of illegal narcotics with the intent to distribute, driving under the influence, reckless driving, and other traffic charges.
The officer thankfully wasn't harmed and is back on duty.
