NORCROSS, Ga. - A man wanted for a string of robberies was killed during a violent confrontation with Gwinnett County police officers along a Norcross roadway on Thursday evening.
It started around 6:36 p.m. at the Waffle House located along Jimmy Carter Boulevard near Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation tells FOX 5 the incident began when Gwinnett County police officers located a burgundy Jeep driven by 39-year-old Steven Scott, whom officials say was wanted by Hall County authorities in a series of robberies.
The officers attempted to pull over Scott, shouting for him to exit the vehicle, but instead, police say he sped forward and pulled out a gun. Scott reportedly shot at the officers, with at least one of the bullets hitting the Waffle House, police say.
The GBI says a Gwinnett County detective tried to stop Scott by blocking the parking lot exit with his car. Scott then reportedly shot the car while entering the roadway, then lost control of the Jeep. Another officer then stopped him from driving away by using a PIT manuever.
With his Jeep stopped, investigators say Scott opened fire through the windshield and through the window at the officer. The officer returned fire, striking Soctt at least once and killing him.
Officers performed first aid on the man until medics arrived.
Scott was pronounced dead at the scene.
No officers or bystanders were injured.
The GBI will conduct an independent investigation which will be given to the Gwinnett County District Attorney's Office for review once completed.
