A Canton man is in custody Monday morning after police charged him with murdering his girlfriend.

Investigators with the Cherokee Sheriff's Office said that 40-year-old Canton resident Jesse Simmons called the police at around 8 p.m. on Saturday to report that his girlfriend, 55-year-old Tammy Gilbert, had shot herself.

Medics rushed Gilbert to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, where they say she later died.

During the investigation at the home Simmons and Gilbert shared on Lower Burris Road in Canton, detectives interviewed Simmons. After the interview, they charged him with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during certain crimes.

Officers arrested Simmons on Sunday and transported him to the Cherokee Adult Detention Center. He has not been granted bond.
