Authorities are investigating a house fire in Cobb County Tuesday night that claimed the lives of a father and son.

The fire happened at a home on Landmark Court just before 10 p.m. Fire officials said emergency officials arrived to find a man in his 80s unresponsive in the living room. CPR attempts to revive him were not successful and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Fire officials said the man likely died from smoke inhalation, but an autopsy will help investigators determine the official cause of death.

The elderly man's adult son was also in the home at the time and was rescued by firefighters as he tried to escape. He was rushed to Cobb Wellstar Hospital, where firefighters said he died as a result of his injuries.

Firefighters also said a dog died in the blaze.

The names of those involved have not yet been released.

The cause is still under investigation, but firefighters believe it may have been accidental in nature.
