Officials warning Georgia drivers to renew May tags early

Georgia officials have a message for anyone who has a tag expiring in May: renew it early.

At a press conference, officials from Fulton, Cobb, DeKalb and Gwinnett counties announced that upgrades to computer systems in late May will leave some services at local tag offices unavailable.

The transition to the new Georgia Driver Record and Integrated Vehicle Enterprise System, or DRIVES, is designed to streamline the Department of Revenue's processes and allow for more services online. The system is planning on starting the upgrade during Memorial Day weekend with a live date of May 28.

However, due to the changes, officials are asking drivers to renew their tags by May 20 to avoid any problems.

In Fulton County, kiosk and online renewals will not be available from May 21 through 27, with vehicle registration and title services down May 23 to 27.

Gwinnett County's kiosks will be down from May 21 through May 26, with online services unavailable from May 23 through May 26 and title and registration service out of service from May 23 through May 27.

DeKalb County tag offices will be closed May 23 through May 28. Kiosks at five Kroger locations will remain up for tag renewals.

In Cobb County, kiosks and online renewal will be down from May 21 through May 29. Tag offices will not be able to provide tag or title services from May 23 through May 27.
