DeKalb County, Chamblee Coalition on Homelessness partner for food giveaway
CHAMBLEE, Ga. - Hundreds of boxes of food will be given away on Nov. 4 in an effort to battle food insecurity in DeKalb County.
That giveaway will be held at Plaza Fiesta located at 166 Buford Highway in Chamblee.
About 400 boxes of food will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis.
More details will be released later about the food giveaway.
The effort is a partnership between DeKalb County and the Chamblee Coalition on Homelessness.
"Food insecurity is a growing problem in Chamblee, Brookhaven and throughout north DeKalb," DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond said. "Our new partnership will help residents who are struggling to feed their families."
Organizers hope this will provide relief to families left hurting due to higher grocery prices due to inflation.
"Members of the coalition are beyond excited to partner with DeKalb County Government to help families who are challenged by food insecurity in the Chamblee area," said Christina Porter, CCH’s founder. "This is a much-needed blessing for 400 families."
What is the Chamblee Coalition on Homelessness?
The CCH is a team of citizens, nonprofits, government agencies, and faith communities born during the pandemic to help served the unhoused population.
The team has helped deliver about 300,000 lunches to nine shelters across metro Atlanta every Saturday for the last three years.
The coalition helped Brookhaven United Methodist Church to open an overnight warming center for women who would otherwise be left out in the cold.
"CCH demonstrates the power of one individual’s efforts to organize neighbors, nonprofits, churches, and government agencies into a coalition where each entity contributes what they can to solve a problem in our community," Porter said.
CCH has partnered with The Community Assistance Center, The St. Vincent de Paul Society, The Salvation Army, The Elizabeth Foundation, The Brookhaven Clergy Group, and Bagel Rescue, among others.
