2 men shot during attempted carjacking

Two men who were trying to prevent a carjacking in Buckhead were both shot in the shoulder.

Two men who stepped in to try to stop a carjacking outside an Atlanta dry cleaners Tuesday afternoon were shot, police said.

Officials said the shooting happened shortly after noon on the 1800 block of Peachtree Road. Officer arrived at the scene to find 45-year-old James Pope and 22-year-old Tanner Pope in the parking lot with gunshot wounds to their shoulders.

According to the preliminary investigation, the incident happened when another man left his 2016 black Volvo SUV running as he went into the cleaners.

When a suspect tried to drive off in the vehicle, police said the two good Samaritans tried to stop him from leaving the parking lot by blocking them in. A second suspect then pulled up in a silver Volkswagen Jetta and shot the Popes. The pair of suspects then fled the scene.

Shooting during carjacking

Two people were shot during a carjacking in Buckhead.

Officers later found the vehicle abandoned on Collier Road. Investigators said it was reported stolen out of Smyrna.

The Popes were both transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition and are expected to survive. The other person was not injured.

The investigation is ongoing at this time.
