Three men are dead in College Park after police said a possible attempted robbery turned into a shooting.

It happened around 3:30 p.m. Monday in a downstairs unit at the back of the Embarcadero Club Apartments Complex on the 2200 block of Sullivan Road. A neighbor, Princess-Jasmine Edwards, said she heard shots from inside her room

"I heard about five or six. It was like back to back, so I thought it was something else," said Edwards.

Investigators said the gunfire erupted when two men went to the door and at one point the resident pulled out his weapon.

"When he produced his own weapon that's when that prompted the exchange of gunfire, it's at that point that we believe it resulted in three deaths and one person being injured," said College Park Police Chief Keith Meadows.

He said the apartment resident and another man in the apartment at the time died in the hail of bullets. He said the intruder was also killed, adding a second intruder, who had been shot in the leg, was taken to the hospital after the apparent attempted robbery.

"At this point we have not ruled out the possibility that drugs might have played a role," said Chief Meadows.

He said two other intruders were arrested in a grey car trying to flee. Leo Rivers, a resident who lives near the apartment where the shootings occurred said he spoke to the brother of the brother of the man killed in the apartment.

"I talked to the brother inside the house and he told me, he was in the backroom playing a video game and when he heard gunfire, he said he just closed the door, if he wouldn't have they probably would have killed him," said Rivers.

It was all a bit much for DelMar GoldSmith who said she works with young people to stop the violence in her community.

"This has to stop. Nothing should make us take each other’s' life. I mean we didn't we didn't give a life for you to take it. It's got to stop," said GoldSmith.

As of late Monday night, College Park Police had not released the names of the three who were killed in the shootings nor the names of the suspects arrested.
