Body pulled from Flint River

The Clayton County police say a passerby called to report a drowning. Police say they arrived to find a body in the Flint River that has likely been there for some time.

Police in Clayton County are investigating after a body was pulled from the Flint River on Monday afternoon.

Officers were called out to an area just east of Southern Regional Medical Center along Upper Riverdale Road in Riverdale around 12:30 p.m. after police said a passerby spotted someone they believed to be drowning in the river. Clayton County police said when officers arrived, they found a person in the water with no signs of life.

The police department called in the dive team to help recover the man's body.

Investigators believe the man’s body had been there since at least last night. The area is known to flood during heavy rain and police said there was flooding last night.

The cause of death was not immediately known. Police said there were no external or overt signs of trauma. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will perform an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death as well as the gender and identity.
