Police: Car thieves get into shootout at DeKalb County apartment complex

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. (FOX 5 Atlanta) - One man is in the hospital and another is on the run after a shootout at a DeKalb County apartment complex.

Police say the shooting started when three young suspects came to the Creekside Apartments on the 3600 block of Pleasantdale Road to attempt to break into several vehicles.

One of the residents saw what the men were doing and confronted them. Police say that's when gunfire erupted, with both the witness and suspects firing shots.

Police say they have two of the three suspects in custody and are looking for a third.

Residents at the apartment complex said they were terrified when they heard the bullets flying.

"I'm definitely strapping because unfortunately, things are changing. We're living in critical times right now," neighbor Rene Jordan said.

Police say the witness was injured after being hit by the suspects' car, but he is expected to be OK.

The incident remains under investigation.
