Police: Drunk driver involved in deadly crash previously arrest for DUI

Police said a drunk driver has been taken into custody after a bicyclist was struck and killed in Sandy Springs Wednesday morning.

Antoinette Battle, 34, was charged by the Sandy Springs Police Department with vehicular homicide and DUI.

Investigators said she struck 29-year-old Marten Bijvank on his bike as he rode to work, then crashed on Roswell Road near Trowbridge Road around 5 a.m.

Sergeant Sam Wortham told FOX 5 News Battle was arrested shortly after the deadly crash.

"Her car was totaled during the crash, so she actually had to climb out of the back window. She was still there on the scene when police arrived and they took her into custody," Sgt. Wortham said.

FOX 5 News has learned a Georgia State Patrol trooper arrested Battle on August 17, 2018, for DUI after he reportedly saw her speeding and swerving in her gray Chrysler 200 across Freedom Parkway. According to the incident report, the trooper spotted Battle going 75 mph in 55 mph zone near the Downtown Connector at 3:38 a.m. In the incident report, the trooper said he noticed a strong odor of alcohol and said Battles had watery bloodshot eyes.

A spokeswoman for the Fulton County Solicitor's Office said Battle was awaiting trial for that DUI case. Wednesday morning the consequences of her alleged DUI for more serious and heartbreaking for the family of Marten Bijvank.
