Police identify men in fatal Union City shooting
UNION CITY, Ga. - Police have identified two men involved in a shooting off Morgan Road at the Hidden Lake apartments, where they said the ordeal left of the men dead and the other with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office identified the deceased Wednesday as 21-year-old Damonta Watkins, of Decatur. The cause of death has not been determined, the office said.
Police say Watkins suffered two gunshot wounds and appeared to be trapped inside a vehicle that had crashed into a tree.
Police said the ordeal happened around 5:45 p.m. Tuesday at the apartment complex, and that robbery may have been the motive in the shooting.
Another man, identified as Octavious Banks, 20, who was a passenger in the same vehicle, was treated for non-life threatening injuries, police said.
Witnesses told FOX 5 off-camera, they heard numerous gunshots, then a loud crash; one woman told FOX 5 she rushed to the SUV that had crashed into a tree, and found a man clinging to life.
"I talked to him some-- to see if he would respond to me or anything," said Lindsey Cooley, who said the man slightly moved but was mostly unresponsive.
Hours after the ordeal, a medical examiner transported a body from the vehicle.
Officers at the scene would not specify if the man died from the car accident, or was also struck by gunfire.
