Chamblee police shooting under investigation

Officials say a police officer shot a man driving a reportedly stolen car during a traffic stop in Chamblee.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called to the scene of a shooting of a driver by a Chamblee police officer on Thursday morning.

The man has been identified as 24-year-old Jeremiah Quincy Kinard of Auburn, Georgia, according to the GBI.

According to the Chamblee Police Department, officers stopped a Jeep Compass shortly before 8 a.m. that they believed was stolen in the parking lot of a Walgreens store in the 5300 block of Peachtree Boulevard near Chamblee Dunwoody Road.

During the interaction between a police officer and the man driving the vehicle, officials say the officer fired his gun, hitting the driver at least once.

Investigators with the GBI say Kinard was not responding to officers and attempted to drive off when confronted. That's when investigators say the shots were fired.

He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital. Officials say he is stable. His exact condition is unknown.

Both Chamblee police investigators and GBI agents remained at the scene gathering evidence and questioning at least one witness.

The officer will be placed on administrative leave while the GBI conducts its independent investigation.

This is the 103rd shooting involving an officer that the GBI has investigated this year.
