Police: Man ambushed while on way to meet online date

The Covington Police Department released surveillance video from September 23 of a man using a stolen credit card at a Wells Fargo Bank.

Investigators said the man who was caught on camera is one of four wanted suspects who ambushed a DeKalb County man when he came to Newton County to meet a woman he met online.

"When he arrived at the house, the victim stated that 3 males came from behind the house and jumped in his car. They presented a weapon and demanded money," said Justin Stott, Covington Police.

Investigators said the suspects forced the victim to get into the backseat of his own car. They held him at gunpoint while they drove to Wells Fargo on Highway 142.

Surveillance video in the bank parking lot captured one of the suspects using the victims debit card.

FOX 5's Elizabeth Rawlins briefly spoke to the victim. He didn't want to go on camera but said he's recovering from his injuries after he managed to escape

According to the police report, the victim made the risky decision to wrestle the gun away from one of the suspects who kept making threats like "were going to beat you then kill you."

As investigators continue to look for the suspects, residents are also on high alert.

"It's a scary world out there you know," said Freddie Webb.

"I'm going to be locking doors instead of leaving them unlocked," said Bobbie Walters.

"Be aware of your surroundings and try to be familiar with what you are getting yourself into when meeting people on the internet," said Stott.
