Search for suspect who stabbed pregnant woman

Brookhaven police are searching for a man who they say stabbed a pregnant mother as she walked along a recreational trail with her small child. The man is 5'8", about 160-180 pounds last seen wearing a tank top, dark shorts, white sneakers and a dark hat with the word "dope" on it.

Brookhaven police are asking for help identifying a suspect accused of stabbing a pregnant woman in front of her child on a trail over the weekend.

Officials said on Saturday, June 5 at around 5:30 p.m., the woman was walking with her child on the Peachtree Creek Greenway when a stranger tried to talk to her.

When the woman walked away, police said the man stabbed her in the back several times with a pocket knife and then fled on the greenway toward Corporate Blvd.

She was able to call 911 and give the police a description of the suspect. People in the area also rushed over to help.

According to police, the woman was seriously injured but is expected to survive. Her child was not injured in the stabbing.

"I think she was incredibly strong and resilient and that was her part and now it's time for the public to do their part by helping us identify this person and holding them accountable," said Lt. David Snively with Brookhaven Police.

Investigators describe the man as between 20 and 30 years old who is around 5-feet-8-inches tall with a weight of 160 to 180 pounds. At the time of the stabbing, he was wearing a white tank top, dark shorts, a dark-colored hat with the word "DOPE" written on it."

"This gives us this disheartening truth that violent crime can happen to any person in any place. The best safety strategy that we offer to folks is to be aware of our surroundings. Have a phone so that you can call 911 or taking note of where other people are or other emergency communications places are," Lt. Snivley said.

A friend of the woman stabbed established a GoFundMe page with a goal of $40,000 to cover medical bills. The page had exceeded more than $37,000 by Wednesday morning.

If you have any information about the stabbing or can identify the suspect, please call the Brookhaven Police Department at 404-637-0477 or by calling Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS(8477).
