Police say murder of teen driver was targeted
ATLANTA - Two teens were ambushed Thursday night in south Atlanta while stopped at an intersection, according to police.
It happened at the corner of Jonesboro Road and Sawtell Avenue. Investigators with the Atlanta Police Department released surveillance video of a car they said a suspect used to spray gunfire into the front window of another car driven by James Simmons, 19. Simmons died from wounds to the upper body and head he received in the incident. Simmons’ friend was also hit, but the wound was minor.
A dark colored sedan is seen in the video turning the corner and heading south on Jonesboro. Police believe that was only seconds after the gunfire.
Simmons was the driver of the other vehicle. Police said the survivor is cooperating and providing some information. It is clear, according to the homicide squad, the two were targeted, but what is not clear is the motive.
