Police Say Road Rage Victim Will Not Be Charged in Fatal Shooting
DACULA, Ga. - Gwinnett Police said the Dacula homeowner who shot a man after an act of road rage was trying to defend himself from the two men who followed him to his house November 12.
Investigators told FOX 5 News that Jesse Campbell will not be charged in the deadly shooting, but one of the men who allegedly attacked him is in the Gwinnett County Jail.
The conflict started near the intersection of Braselton Highway and Auburn Road and ended a mile away. Cpl. Michele Pihera said Jack Vawter, 24, of Buford, and his friend, Richard Fawbush, 24, of Dacula, were in a red pickup truck when they encountered Campbell. While police say it's not clear who said or did what first, they said there's no question Vawter and Fawbush followed Campbell all the way to his home in Dacula's Windsong Park Subdivision. Fawbush died and police charged Vawter with aggravated assault after the homeowner told police Vawter came towards him with an unusual makeshift weapon shaped like a pipe.
"He says both men got out of their truck and they were approaching him with the weapon. He thought they were getting ready to use the weapon to assault him and he says that's why he felt he had to use lethal force. This looks like self-defense so we are not going to charge Cambpell," Cpl Pihera said.
The 34-year-old homeowner told us he had nothing to say about what happened in his driveway. Off camera, his neighbors told FOX 5 News they are relieved Campbell is not facing criminal charges by police. The case will be turned over to the district attorney for further review.
