Police Search for Man Who Shot Atlanta Police Officer

ATLANTA - Police said they know who shot an Atlanta Police officer, leaving him injured early Monday morning.

The shooting took place on a stretch of MLK Drive near Cascade Skating Rink in southwest Atlanta. Investigators said the shooting was triggered by a call for help.

"Someone called 911 and gave information that their friend was in some type of trouble. That's what initiated the traffic stop," explained Major Paul Guerrucci.

That friend, according to police, was the driver of a yellow Ford Mustang, who got out of the car once he saw the blue lights. That’s when police said the passenger they identified as Anthony Bernard Williams, also hoped out and exchanged gunfire with police.

"The driver started running towards police. The passenger opened fire, striking the driver and police cars," detailed Guerrucci.

Police believe they struck Williams, but he hasn’t shown up at any area hospitals. Police said he took off in a nearby car, and ditched it about a mile away on Fairburn Road.  Police continue to search for him.

The officer was struck in the arm during the exchange. The driver was also hit in the hail of bullets. Both were treated at Grady Memorial Hospital.
