Police: Suspect shot, killed after hours-long SWAT standoff
ATLANTA - A suspect was shot and killed by SWAT officers after a 6-hour standoff in northwest Atlanta early Thursday morning.
Just before 2 a.m. Thursday, officers responded to a house on Kennesaw Drive after getting multiple "shots fired" calls. Police said one of the calls came from the gunman himself.
When officers arrived, someone inside the house fired three shots at them. Luckily, none of the officers were hit, but one Atlanta Police officer was hurt during the initial response. He suffered an injury to his head and arm while trying to seek cover.
Police brought in the SWAT team for back-up, set up a perimeter and evacuated a few nearby houses. Officers used family members to communicate with the gunman.
The suspect eventually exited the home, according to police, but refused commands to surrender. That's when SWAT officers opened fire. Atlanta Police said it appears the suspect was struck.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Although investigators don't know what set off the man, the family told them he recently broke up with his girlfriend.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will investigate the shooting.
