Police: Two shot at Georgia State campus
ATLANTA - Two people, including a student, are recovering in the hospital after a shooting on the Georgia State University campus late Monday night.
It happened in the parking lot of the Piedmont North student house center located on Piedmont Avenue near Ellis Street. Police said around 9:30 p.m. a student, identified as Bryan Rhoden, 18, came out to sell drugs to two people in a car. Somehow the drug deal went bad and gunfire rang out, according to investigators.
Investigators told FOX 5 both Rhoden and the driver, Torance Flournoy II, 19, were shot. Rhoden was hit in the chest and Flournoy suffered three gunshot wounds, according to police.
GSU Police said one person jumped out of the car, scaled a fence and then ran to a nearby GSU police substation to alert authorities. Jalyn Isaiah Knight, 18, was detained by police for questioning.
Initially, investigators thought this was a robbery, but later connected drugs to the shooting. Police said they recovered a Glock .40 caliber handgun and a significant amount of marijuana in a backpack belonging to Rhoden. They also found a .22 caliber handgun belonging to Flournoy.
Flourney has been charged with assault felony, attempted murder and possession of firearm on campus misdemeanor. The same charged are also pending for Rhoden.
Rhoden and Flournoy are recovering at Grady Memorial Hospital. Both are in serious condition.
