Woman injured in apparent road rage shooting, police say

Atlanta police are investigating a shooting in front of the iconic Plaza Theatre on Ponce De Leon Avenue as a possible road-rage incident.

Atlanta police are investigating a shooting in front of the iconic Plaza Theatre on Ponce De Leon Avenue as a possible road-rage incident.

Officers were called out around 2:50 p.m. to the scene near North Highland Avenue NE. Investigators say they found a woman suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. She was alert, conscious and breathing when shew as taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Witnesses, who believed this was an incident of road rage, told FOX 5 they heard people arguing before hearing the gunshots.

Police confirmed that the woman and a male suspect were in a verbal dispute that escalated. That suspect was detained and later taken from the scene in the back of a patrol car.

Atlanta Police Departments's Aggravated Assault Unit are investigating the circumstances leading up to the shooting.

The incident may have involved a FedEx employee. A spokesperson for FedEx released the following statement:

"We are aware of the incident in Atlanta involving one of our team members, and continue to cooperate fully with local police. Any further questions should be directed to investigators."

Plaza Theatre released the following statement on Facebook on Monday evening:

"There was an incident today in the front parking lot involving customers of a nearby business while we were closed. One person was taken for medical care and the other apprehended by APD. 

"All Plaza Theatre staff are safe. Thank you for reaching out to check on us."
