SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — The Port of Savannah is expanding its fleet of towering ship-to-shore cranes to accommodate giant cargo ships arriving through the expanded Panama Canal.
Four new cranes measuring 295 feet tall arrived by ship at the port Monday. That means the port's Garden City Terminal now has 26 total cranes used to load and unload cargo containers from ships.
Griff Lynch, executive director of the Georgia Ports Authority, said in a news release the additional cranes give Savannah the ability to move as many as one thousand shipping containers per hour. The new cranes have a reach of roughly 200 feet, allowing them to handle cargo on supersized ships that began navigating the Panama Canal's expanded locks in June.
The Port of Savannah is the fourth-busiest U.S. container port.
