Prince to receive Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award

The Recording Academy is awarding Prince with the Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award in February.

What we know: Prince, who died from an accidental overdose in 2016, is among the seven honorees for the Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award including, Frankie Beverly, The Clash, Dr. Bobby Jones, Taj Mahal, Roxanne Shante, and Frankie Valli. 

The Recording Academy’s National Trustees vote for the honorees of the Special Merit Award, which is awarded to those who "during their lifetimes, have made creative contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording."

Dig deeper: Prince is a seven-time Grammy Award winner who has sold over 150 million records. Three of his albums have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, including, "1999", "Purple Rain", and "Sign of the Times". The Minnesota native is "considered by many to be the greatest artist of all time," according to the press release. 

A project featuring Prince’s work as mastering engineer, "Diamonds and Pearls: Super Deluxe Edition", has also been nominated for Best Historical Album at the upcoming Grammy’s. 

The Recording Academy’s Special Merit Awards Ceremony will take place at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles on Feb. 1, the day before the 67th Grammy Awards.
