Woman dies after falling at Tallulah Gorge

Officials said a woman died after falling at Tallulah Gorge.

Habersham County officials have identified a woman who was the subject of a resuce, then recovery effort at Tallulah Gorge State Park on Thursday.

The body of Nancy Moore Smith, 58, of Blue Ridge, was recovered at the bottom of the gorge by Habersham and Rabun County personnel using long lines.

Georgia DNR Game Wardens, along with Habersham County and Rabun County EMS personnel, were called to the area regarding a report of an individual who fell from Overlook 2.

Multiple agencies, including the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Park Rangers, Rabun County Fire and, Tallulah Falls Fire at the park responded to the incident.

According to officials, it was unclear whether the victim fell off or jumped from a ledge of the Gorge. At its highest point, the gorge is nearly 1,000 feet deep.

The DNR Law Enforcement Critical Incident Reconstruction Team is investigating the incident.
