DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. (FOX 5 Atlanta) - Word spread among the resident of the Kirkwood neighborhood that their 87-year-old neighbor might lose their home. What happened next was an amazing banding together of near-strangers to help her pay her property taxes.
Ms. Annie Bee has lived in Kirkwood for 55 years and residents were concerned the woman would be forced to leave her home after she couldn't pay her $1,168 balance in two weeks.
"My greatest fear as her next door neighbor is seeing her lose this house," said Lauren Harms, a neighbor, and resident who tried to find ways to pay the balance.
Many residents in DeKalb and Fulton counties have been hit with sky-high property taxes after home appraisals have risen dramatically in recent years in desirable real estate neighborhoods.
Harms eventually created a GoFund Me account to raise the funds. Neighbors raised $2,500 in one hour and more than $5,000 by the next day.
"I had goosebumps, tears in my eyes," Harms said.
