The reward for information leading to an arrest in the murder of a Butts County man has doubled.

According to the Butts County Sheriff's Office, two or three masked men burst into a home on Shoemaker Street just before 9 p.m. on January 2. During a struggle, one of them shot Derrick Denson, 40, in the head.  Denson later died at a Macon hospital.

"It was a big shock and a big hurt, you know," said Lester Clark, Denson's cousin.  "Nobody expects, you know, their family members to get tragically murdered like that."

Investigators initially offered a $5,000 reward in the case but said Crime Stoppers offered to match that amount and increase the total reward to $10,000.

"It is a tragic incident and we're working around the clock to get this one solved," said Butts County Sheriff's Office Major Jeff Nix.

Anyone with information in the case should call 770-775-8216. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
