GBI identifies man shot, killed by Riverdale police

The man shot by Riverdale police officers last night has died. The officer-involved shooting happened inside a medical office along River Park Drive, not far from Southern Regional Medical Center.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Riverdale.

According to a release sent Friday morning, Riverdale Police Department officers responded to a call about two men trespassing inside a medical office that was being renovated on River Park Drive at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Upon arrival, they learned that one of the men had left the property at the request of contractors on site, but the other man was still inside.

Police officers located Darryl Fussell, 23, of Dacula, and attempted to convince him to leave, according to the release.

However, Fussell allegedly grabbed a sharp tool and rushed the officers.

"The building was being renovated, he wasn't supposed to be there," explained Nelly Miles, GBI spokesperson.  "Instead of leaving, [Fussell] actually charged the officers with a sharp tool and that point a Riverdale police officer did shoot the man.  He ended up getting taken to a local hospital where he died."

The GBI Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy on Fussell.

This is the 31st officer-involved shooting the GBI has been asked to investigate this year.

"The way that the GBI investigations work is that agents go on a fact-finding mission and that is there goal—find out the facts of what happened.  Once they gather all their facts and they take that case to the Clayton County District Attorney's Office," Miles explained. "The district attorney's office will determine what the next steps are in the criminal justice process."

Miles said these types of investigations usually take 60 to 90 days to complete.
