A small plane crashed at the Gwinnett County Airport Sunday, according to fire department officials.

Fire crews arrived at the airport located in the 700 block of Airport Road in Lawrenceville around 12:40 p.m., and found the single-engine plane crashed at the beginning of a runway.

Firefighters used a hose line with foam to get the fire under control.

Officials told FOX 5 News two people, an instructor and a student, were aboard the plane but were able to exit safely. Both were evaluated for any possible injuries.

The Cessna 172 aircraft is considered a complete loss. The plane was doing touch-and-go maneuvers for training before crashing.

According to airport tower personnel, the plane did not make any distress calls.

The Airport Authority at Briscoe Field closed the runway during the incident, but other operations were not affected.
