What we know:
Three people were injured in an illegal drifting accident at Southlake, with authorities expressing relief that no fatalities occurred. The incident took place in the lower pit behind the Thunder Tower West Harley Davidson Store, where a crowd of 50 to 100 people had gathered to watch drivers perform stunts on snow and ice. According to Major Mark Woodall of the Morrow Police, the drifting involved cars going in circles and creating tire smoke, an activity that is illegal unless conducted at an organized event with proper safety measures. "They were drifting, which is going in circles and smoke in their tires, which is illegal anywhere except for an organized event with SAFETY, security and emergency medical in place," Woodall said.
Timeline:
The call to Clayton County 911 was received just before 5 p.m., reporting that three people had been hit by a vehicle. One of the victims, believed to be a bystander, sustained more serious injuries and was transported by EMS to Grady Hospital. "One of the three was worse and was treated and transported by EMS," Woodall added.
What's next:
The driver responsible for hitting the spectators fled the scene, but Morrow police are confident that he will be apprehended soon. "We have social media video, a lot of it that we are examining. I would say we have a strong lead. Too much social media out there. Too many cameras," Woodall stated. The suspect could face multiple charges, including drifting, reckless conduct, hit and run, and failure to render aid. Evidence of the drifting crash was visible on the damaged front and rear fenders of a Mustang at the scene.
