Spring weather outlook: Wet and cool

A cool and rainy forecast dominates the discussion for the long range Southeast weather outlook. Of course, long range forecasts are only an average of what is expected in a 3 month time frame. Spring is a volatile season with drastic temperatures changes. Between March and May we will have abnormally warm sunny spells mixed with cool rainy periods.

El Nino is finally weakening, but still plays a role in this spring’s temperatures and rainfall. The southern portion of the jet stream is expected to continue to spend more time moving through the southern states. This does two things. First, it allows a bit of cooler air to settle into the southeast. Secondly, the southern flow of the upper level winds will steer large scale systems into the Southeast.

Despite the troubles this brings to the Southeast, northerners will likely enjoy this setup. Above average temperatures are expected across the northern tier of the country, especially in the upper Midwest.
