Deputy injured in shootout

A Gwinnett County sheriff's deputy was injured while assisting police officers with a chase of a stolen vehicle. The man responsible barricaded himself in that SUV. He was eventually arrested.

A Gwinnett County sheriff's deputy was injured in a shootout with a man in a stolen SUV who investigators said led law enforcement officers on a chase before barricading himself in the vehicle.

Just after 5 p.m., officers spotted the stolen SUV near the intersection of Pleasant Hill Road and Sweetwater Drive. Officers tried to stop the vehicles, but the driver took off.

The driver led officers less than a mile away to the Anzio Apartment Homes located in the 3100 block of Sweetwater Road near Old Norcross Road just west of Lawrenceville. Officers and deputies followed the vehicle into the complex.

At some point, shots were exchanged, striking a Gwinnett County K-9 Unit deputy. That deputy was rushed in stable condition to an area hospital. They are expected to make a full recovery. The deputy’s name has not been released.

Police said no K-9s were injured.

"He started shooting at the police — it was like one shot — pow!" one resident said.

The man then barricaded himself in his vehicle, prompting a SWAT standoff. Law enforcement officers flooded the area.

SKYFOX 5 just after 6 p.m. flew over the scene. At least 50 police cruisers were spotted at an apartment complex near Lawrenceville on Friday. The police cars lined the roadway for about two-tenths of a mile.

Sweetwater Road was closed between Pleasant Hill and Old Norcross roads for several hours.

Officers in tactical gear, holding long rifles were seen knocking on doors and escorting residents from their homes. Residents confirmed they were evacuated. Several residents were left standing on a sidewalk in front of the complex while police worked to resolve the situation.

The suspect was eventually taken into custody. He was rushed to an area hospital and his condition is not known. His name and possible charges have not been released.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been asked to investigate the officer-involved shooting.
