Teen dies after shooting in southeast Atlanta; another teen injured

Police are investigating a shooting Thursday night that left one teenager dead and put another teen in the hospital. 

The Fulton County Medical Examiner has identified the victim as James Simmons, 19, of Atlanta. 

The shooting took place around 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of Jonesboro Road and Sawtell Avenue in southeast Atlanta. Police said Simmons and another teen were in a white car when a black vehicle pulled up next to them and opened fire. Both teens were shot and crashed into a fence nearby. 

Neighbors said they heard the gunfire and called 911. 

Simmons died at the scene and the other teen was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital. Investigators said he was alert, conscious and breathing. 

Police also said the surviving teen has cooperated with detectives.
